Formals or Semi-Formals: What’s The Ultimate Date Outfit?

by Editor

Have a date and confused on what to wear?

Big Question – Are you dressing to impress or express? Regardless, you have to know your style, the vibe you want to present, and the occasion to decide which outfit to go for. When it comes to a date, that’s a whole different story. Here are a few tips that will help you decide whether you want to wear formal or semi-formal for the upcoming date.

1. Know the difference:

Formal attires are crisp, tailored, and will be mostly inclining towards dress codes that relate to black or white tie. However, a semi-formal attire is the relaxed one. At the core of it, both the sets have suits and boots involved, but the style of wearing them and the colour combination is where the difference arises.

2. The location of your date:

The location of your date has a huge role to play in the type of attire you choose for your date. If you’re thinking of a five star restaurant with all the jazz, then your go-to will be formal. It suits the environment. But, a club or a relaxed evening date with a preppy environment? Then your chosen outfit should be semi-formal.

3. Is this a first date?:

Often, we end up putting too much effort on our first date and play around with the various options. No need for that. A first date is not a business meeting. Keep your outfit semi-formal, keep it casual. However, and this is the important bit, do not go too easy on the outfit. First impression is the last impression.

4. Styling options from your end:

If you are someone who doesn’t like to play around with colours or styles, then you should stick to formals. The reason being with formals you stick to a particular set of guidelines. You stick to those, you’re good to go. With semi-formals, You have room to play around with colours and styles.

5. Limitation of accessories:

If you feel like you’re the type who likes to put on some accessories (not too much!) then you should definitely go for the semi-formal outfits. These outfits have the vibe which can match with accessories. However, if you wear formals then do not touch the accessories except your cufflinks. Cufflinks are the subtle addition to the formal look.

6. The choice of shoes:

Shoes do matter a lot. A man’s shoe will always be noticed. Dress shoes and formal shoes are not the same. If you feel like rocking the dress shoes then definitely put on a two-piece semi-formal outfit and you’re ready. Otherwise, with formal shoes it’s always going to be formal outfits, no questions asked.

The point of outfits is to make sure you give out a strong vibe of a good fashion sense and mind you, a good fashion sense is important with the ladies! Whether you are preparing for a date with your girlfriend or your wife or even a first date, take your time with choosing the outfit. Also, grooming is extremely important. Get a good shave, get your hair in place with your own style preference, choose a cologne that works for you, and most importantly, SHOW UP ON TIME!
